Northern Light Lake Loop

The Northern Light Lake Loop is a remote canoe circuit that links a series of lakes, following their narrow bays and short portages, offering a varied and immersive backcountry paddling experience. The route is well suited to paddlers looking for a mix of lake travel, intimate waterways, and classic portage travel through boreal forest. As the loop continues, the landscape shifts between forested shorelines, marshy wetlands rich with birdlife, and exposed rocky points offering wide views and excellent campsite locations. Wildlife sightings are common throughout the route, particularly moose, waterfowl, and loons. Campsites are generally found on elevated ground near portage landings or on rocky lake points with good swimming and sunset views.
Trips begin at the Boat Dock on Northern Light Lake, where paddlers set out across open water before entering smaller, more sheltered areas of the larger lake.

• Inconsistent cell reception in the area. All paddlers are encouraged to bring a satellite-enabled communication device.

• This route stays within Canada, but travels next to the border with the USA in some parts.

• Large lakes pose a wind hazard, paddlers should be comfortable with wind and navigation on big water.

• Wildlife: Black bears and wood ticks are found throughout this area.

• Campsites and portages are rustic and not professionally maintained.

The only road access is at the Boat Dock on the east shore of Northern Light Lake.
This route connects to Quetico Provincial Park in the north as well as to Lake Superior in the east via following the Grand Portage through the United States of America.
