Eagle Lake is a sprawling, island-dotted Shield lake that delivers classic northwestern Ontario paddling—clear water, rugged granite shorelines, and expansive views balanced by quiet bays and winding narrows. Most trips begin at the public docks in Vermilion Bay. When paddled as a loop, it is recommended to travel west towards Tagau Lake first, then turn south and east, following the natural flow of water through the smaller connecting creeks and lakes which lead back to Eagle Lake's southeastern shore.
Along the loop, paddlers spend much of their time in the narrow lakes and meandering waterways south of Eagle Lake, enjoying more intimate, secluded waters accessible only by portage. The route features several challenging portage sequences, twisting marshy creek paddles, and rewarding campsites perched on smooth granite ledges overlooking large, windswept lakes.
