Situated between Kenora and Vermilion Bay, Ontario, the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) are a unique freshwater research facility which includes over 50 small lakes and connections to further lake systems in the region. There is no official maintenance of this area, however many portages are kept-up and signed in the area. Unauthorized motorized boats are not permitted in the area, which makes the area an ideal getaway for canoers and preserves its idyllic freshwater ecosystems.
